Are you growing around the fence?
I was out for a run on Tuesday and this tree caught my eye, it's grown around the fence and completely enveloped it.
Over time, the fence became part of the tree, not because it belongs there, but because the tree didn’t have another option. Trees just keep growing, wrapping themselves around the thing in the way.
We do this too.
When something feels too hard to deal with - an uncomfortable conversation, a quiet resentment, a disappointment we’ve never voiced - we just carry on. We adapt. We grow around it, and we make it work. And then one day we realise that the thing we thought we were avoiding has quietly become part of us.
It shows up in our relationships. In the way we protect ourselves. In the way we hesitate. In the way we speak (or don’t speak). In what we believe about ourselves.
We’re so good at swallowing hard things down that we forget we have other options.
Create space, instead.
When we get more comfortable having difficult conversations, whether that’s with someone else or with ourselves, we create space. This is space to move, space to breathe, and space to grow without carrying something that was never meant to stay with us.
So I’ll leave you with this question for the week:
What are you growing around right now?
Because putting a name to it, even if it's just to yourself, is a great place to start.
